How To Clean Pickup Roller On Brother Printer

If the paper feed rollers are stained with ink or have a buildup of paper dust, it may cause paper feed issues.

1.  Do one of the following:

     - If the error "Repetitive No Paper Fed" is displayed, press Close on the Touchscreen.  Continue to step 2.

     - If there is no error on the Touchscreen, go to step 2.

2.  Clean the Paper Feed Rollers.

     a.  Unplug your machine from the power outlet.

     b.  Remove the paper tray and set it aside.

          - Clean the gray rollers using a lint-free cloth lightly moistened with one of the following:

               - A non-flammable glass cleaner.

               - Rubbing (isopropyl) alcohol.

               - Water.

                    - If you don't have a lint-free cloth, use an alcohol prep pad (such as the kind that can be found in a first aid kit or medicine cabinet).

note icon Don't use any sort of rough or abrasive cloth (like a napkin or tissue) as the fibers can coat the rollers and damage your machine.

     c.  Firmly grasp the machine by placing your left thumb under the front of the machine, at the media door, and your fingers on the top cover.

note icon Don't try to lift the machine from the control panel area, as the control panel will tilt when lifted, and this could cause you to drop the machine.

     d.  Lift the front of the machine 6-to-8 inches from the desk or table's surface.

     e.  While holding up the machine, place the damp cloth on the palm of your other hand and slide your hand under the machine to clean the two gray pickup rollers.

     f.  Aggressively clean both pickup rollers.

          - The rollers will spin freely.

note icon Although the area where the gray rollers is narrow and tight, the machine cannot be damaged when cleaning the rollers.  The rollers are on a movable plate and will move up and down.

     g.  Use a dry cloth to dry off both rollers.

          - Make sure both rollers are dry before reinstalling the paper tray.

     h. Gently place the machine flat on the surface.

     i. Slowly push the paper tray back into the machine.

     j.  Reconnect the power cord to the power outlet.  Continue to step 3.

3. Test by printing a PQCS.

     a.  Press Ink Key on the Touchscreen.

     b.  Press ▲ or ▼ to displayImprove Print Quality.  Press Improve Print Quality .

     c. PressCheck Print Quality .

     d.  Press OK .  A PQCS will print .

     e.  Press Home Key.

          - If the PQCS prints with no errors, go to step 4.

          - If the error "No Paper Fed" returns, go to step 5.

          - If the error "Repetitive No Paper Fed" is displayed, press Close on the Touchscreen, and go to step 5.

4. Test by making a multi-page copy.

     - No paper or documents should be loaded into the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) at the top of the machine.  If there are, remove them.

          a.  Press Copy on the Touchscreen.

          b.  Press + on the Touchscreen until the number of copies changes from 01 to 05.

          c.  Press Black Start on the Touchscreen.

               - If all five pages eject with no error, your issue has been resolved.  Your machine is working properly.

               - If the error "No Paper Fed" returns, go to step 5.

               - If the error "Repetitive No Paper Fed" is displayed, press Close on the Touchscreen, and go to step 5.

5. Press Red X to clear the error message.

6. Verify the paper matches the machine specifications.

     - If the paper does meet the machine's specifications, go to step 6a.

     - If the paper doesn't meet the machine's specifications, it will need to be replaced with paper within the machine's paper recommendations.  To replace the paper, go to step 6a.

          a.  Remove the paper tray.

          b.  Open the output paper tray cover (1).

          c.  Remove the paper loaded into the tray.

note icon If using a size of paper other than 8.5 x 11 letter size paper, we'll need to test with letter size paper only.

          d.  Gently press and slide the paper guides (1) to fit letter size paper.

               - Make sure the triangular mark (2) on the paper guide (1) lines up with the mark for letter size paper (LTR).

          e.  Retrieve a stack of fresh, 8.5 x 11 letter size paper, and fan it well to avoid jams and misfeeds.

note icon Don't use any of the following types of paper:

                    - Damaged, curled, wrinkled, or irregularly shaped paper.
- Extremely shiny or highly textured paper.
- Paper that can't be arranged uniformly when stacked.

          f.  Place the letter size paper into the tray, print size down and top edge first.

               - Make sure the paper is in Landscape orientation (short ends of the paper on the left and right side of the tray).

               - Don't push the paper too far into the tray as doing such may lift at the back of the tray and cause feed problems.

          g.  Adjust the paper guides to fit the paper.

               - Make sure the paper guides touch the edges of the paper.

          h.  Make sure the paper is flat in the tray and below the maximum paper mark (1).

          i.  Close the paper tray cover.

j.  Reinstall the paper tray.

               - There should be a slight snap or click once the tray is seated properly.

          k.  While holding the paper tray in place, pull out the paper support (1) until it clicks, then unfold the paper support flap (2).  Continue to step 7.

7. Test by printing a PQCS.

     a.  Press Ink Key on the Touchscreen.

     b.  Press ▲ or ▼ to displayImprove Print Quality.  Press Improve Print Quality .

     c. PressCheck Print Quality .

     d.  Press OK .  A PQCS will print .

     e.  Press Home Key .

          - If the PQCS prints with no errors, your machine is working properly.  Your issue has been resolved.

          - If the error "No Paper Fed" or " Repetitive No Paper Fed" is displayed, your machine will require service.  Go to Warranty and Service Options.

Warranty and Service Options:

Your machine has a two-year limited exchange warranty.  Check the warranty status of your machine by clicking on the Machine Warranty Calculator.

If in warranty, contact Brother Customer Support or locate a Brother Authorized Service Center to schedule product replacement or repair.

If out of warranty, locate a Brother Authorized Service Center.  Repair fees might apply for out-of-warranty products.
